Franconia is an older Fairfax County community built out mainly through the 1960s and 1970s, carrying an Alexandria mailing address and sitting next to the Franconia-Springfield Metro. The timing left a mark you can still see in the chimneys. Houses here went up with open masonry fireplaces, and then the energy crisis arrived and a great many of those fireplaces had wood stove inserts dropped into them. A lot of those inserts are still in place.<\/span><\/h3>\n

We hold the Certified Chimney Professional (CCP) and Certified Chimney Reliner (CCR) certifications, so we are trained to inspect, diagnose, and repair a chimney to the National Fire Protection Association NFPA 211 code. An insert installed in the 1970s or 1980s was frequently set into the firebox without a dedicated liner running up the flue, which was common practice then and is not acceptable now. Finding that is routine work for us in Franconia.<\/p>\n

We perform all inspection levels defined by NFPA 211. In Franconia the first question on an older home is whether the insert is properly vented, because an unlined insert dumps exhaust into an oversized masonry flue that was never sized for it. That is a Level 2 inspection, it requires pulling the unit forward to see what is behind it, and we photograph what we find.<\/span><\/p>\n

A full brushing of the flue to clear soot, creosote, and any blockage restricting airflow. An insert vented into an oversized flue produces exactly the conditions that create glazed creosote: slow-moving exhaust cooling too fast on the way up. Glazed creosote will not brush off. When we find it we treat it chemically first, then remove it, rather than pretending a standard sweep did the job.<\/span><\/p>\n
