Belle Haven sits along the George Washington Memorial Parkway south of Old Town, a Fairfax County neighborhood with an Alexandria address and a housing stock that skews older and larger than most of the corridor. Many of these houses were built between the wars, and a house of that size and vintage rarely has just one fireplace. We hold the Certified Chimney Professional (CCP) and Certified Chimney Reliner (CCR) certifications, which means we are trained to inspect, diagnose, and repair a chimney to the National Fire Protection Association NFPA 211 code. Multi-flue chimneys are where that code knowledge stops being academic. Flues sharing a stack have to be properly separated and correctly terminated, and when they are not, smoke from one fireplace comes out of another one upstairs.<\/p>\n

We perform all inspection levels defined by NFPA 211. In Belle Haven that means inspecting every flue in the stack rather than the one attached to the fireplace you happen to be using. A sound liner keeps heat away from the framing behind your walls and protects the masonry from corrosive flue gases. In a multi-flue chimney each flue has its own liner and its own condition, and it is common to find one sound and another cracked in the same stack.
