Arlington sits directly across the Potomac from Washington, and its chimneys split along the same line its neighborhoods do. The towers of Rosslyn, Ballston, and Crystal City are one kind of building entirely, while North Arlington holds the brick colonials and bungalows of Cherrydale, Lyon Village, and Westover, most of them built before the Second World War. Those pre-war flues were sized for a different era of burning, and they need someone who has seen them before.<\/span><\/h3>\n

We hold the Certified Chimney Professional (CCP) and Certified Chimney Reliner (CCR) certifications, meaning we are trained to inspect, diagnose, and repair a chimney to the National Fire Protection Association NFPA 211 code. In Arlington that training earns its keep on the older housing stock. A chimney built in the 1920s was not designed around modern inserts or gas conversions, and a lot of what we find in North Arlington is a flue doing a job it was never sized for.<\/p>\n

We perform all inspection levels defined by NFPA 211. Arlington homes change hands often and they change hands fast, which makes the Level 2 inspection the one we run most here. It is the inspection that looks at the parts of the flue nobody can see from the firebox, and on a house approaching a century old that is exactly where the problems are. A full brushing of the flue to clear soot, creosote, and anything restricting airflow. Arlington fireplaces tend to be recreational rather than primary heat, which sounds safer than it is.
